How to Hold an Art Exhibition on a Budget – Right in Your Living Room!

This autumn, I decided to turn my living room into a gallery for my exhibition, My Life in Stitches. It was a personal and practical choice, allowing me to take full control over the space and the creative process, all while keeping the costs down.

Clearing out the furniture was the first step. I wanted a blank canvas to transform the room into a gallery-quality space. I even ripped off the wallpaper and painted the walls white, turning my living room into an ideal exhibition environment. The best part? I had total freedom to nail, drill, and screw things into the walls—no restrictions, no compromises.

The cost of hiring an exhibition space can add up quickly, but by doing it all myself, I saved a significant amount. Sure, I had to buy a wallpaper removal machine and paint, but that was far cheaper than renting a space. For me, it felt like the perfect solution—more exhibition, less cost!

One of the unexpected perks was being able to host a private view easily. Since my kitchen was just next door, I could quickly prepare drinks and snacks for my friends and neighbours, creating an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. It made the event feel personal and accessible.

The concept of My Life in Stitches was all about rebuilding my life after a difficult few years. Given that this journey took place in my home, it felt completely natural to hold the exhibition here as well. The space itself became part of the story, representing the healing and transformation I’ve gone through.

In the end, this “living room exhibition” was perfect for me. It was cost-effective, personal, and gave me complete creative freedom. If you're on a budget or just want to create a truly intimate exhibition experience, I highly recommend giving it a try!
