大渕園子 | SONOKO OBUCHI
Multimedia Artist / Designer
Born in 1982 in Fukuoka, Japan, Sonoko Obuchi pursued her artistic journey in the UK, earning a BA in Spatial Design from the University of the Arts London in 2005. She became the first Artist in Residence at Historic Royal Palaces.
As a multimedia artist and visual storyteller, Sonoko’s work spans set design, video, and fine art. She has designed for the Standon Calling boutique music festival, London’s Millfield Theatre, and worked as a stylist for Gorillaz’s Strobelite music video. Her fashion collaborations have been featured in Vogue UK, Grazia and The Guardian.
Her solo exhibition POP JAPAN (2017) at The Dugdale Centre, London, was extended due to popular demand. More recently, her animation work for Haruki Murakami’s Sputnik Sweetheart theatre production at Arcola Theatre earned her a nomination for the Offies 2024 Video Design award.
In late 2024, Sonoko launched My Life in Stitches, a deeply personal exhibition reflecting on her family’s challenges with school refusal and mental health. The exhibition has since toured Japan and the UK, with upcoming showings in Ireland, Thailand, and London (2026). The project continues to spark conversations around mental health and education. Beyond her artistic practice, Sonoko is an ambassador for What To Do Now, a social enterprise connecting young people with educational and career opportunities.
In March 2025, she was interviewed by The Guardian about her experience navigating school refusal as a parent.
Sonoko’s work continues to explore identity, relationships, and intangible narratives through [fine art], [theatrical designs], and [video design]. She currently resides in the UK with her family.

マルチメディアアーティスト / デザイナー
1982年、福岡県生まれ。大渕園子は、イギリスでアートの道を歩み、2005年にロンドン芸術大学で空間デザインの学士号（ファースト）を取得。歴史的王宮（Historic Royal Palaces）の初代王宮アーティストに選ばれる。
マルチメディアアーティスト、デザイナーとして、舞台美術、映像、ファインアートの分野で活躍。これまでに、Standon Callingブティック音楽フェスティバルやロンドンのMillfield Theatreの舞台美術を手がけ、Gorillazの「Strobelite」MVではスタイリストを務めた。また、Vogue UK、Grazia、The Guardianなどのメディアにファッションブランドとのコラボレーションでも取り上げられた。
2017年、ロンドンのThe Dugdale Centreで開催した個展 POP JAPAN は大好評を博し、会期延長となる。近年では、ロンドンのアーコラ・シアター（Arcola Theatre）で上演された村上春樹原作の舞台「 スプートニクの恋人」 にてアニメーション映像を制作し、英国演劇界で栄誉ある賞の一つ「オフ・ウエストエンド・シアター・アワードOffies 2024」のビデオデザイン賞にノミネートされる。
2024年末には、家族が経験した不登校やメンタルヘルスの課題をテーマにした個展 My Life in Stitches を発表。日本とイギリスを巡回し、今後はアイルランド、タイ、そして2026年にはロンドンでの展示が予定されている。本プロジェクトは、メンタルヘルスや教育に関する対話を促進し続けている。
また、若者が学びやキャリアの機会を見つける手助けをする社会企業 What To Do Now のアンバサダーも務めている。
2025年3月には、不登校の子どもを持つ親としての経験について、英紙ガーディアンにインタビューを受ける。
現在も、ファインアート、舞台デザイン、映像デザインを通じて、アイデンティティや人間関係、目に見えない物語を探求し続けている。イギリス在住、家族とともに暮らす。
